Rent is a big issue in Boston, and that’s a shame.
The average price of a one-bedroom apartment in the Boston metropolitan area is now around $2,200 a month, according to data from Zillow.
But the average price for a two-bedroom unit is now closer to $4,400.
While the median price of an apartment in Boston has decreased from $2.7 million to $2 million, that’s not enough to afford a typical rent, and the number of renters who can afford it is much lower.
Renters who are trying to save money on rent often face an uphill battle.
While rent is rising in Boston and around the country, it’s not the only problem in the city.
Here are seven other things you need to know about Boston’s housing market.1.
It’s a pretty crowded market.
Boston’s rental market is one of the priciest in the country.
According to Zillows, the median rent for a one, two, or three-bedroom rental in Boston is $1,950, while the median income for a household is $45,600.
But that’s only the beginning of the rental market.
“There’s also a lot of competition in the market,” said Amanda Knepper, an economist with the Urban Institute.
In Boston, “people are trying very hard to find a good apartment for a low price,” she said.
“But it’s also not just one price.
There are many different apartments in the same market, and there are some that are expensive, but not so expensive that it’s a no-brainer for most people.”2.
There’s a shortage of housing.
Boston has a shortage in the housing market, according with the Boston Rent Board.
According the data, there are 4,935 affordable apartments in Boston that are not available for rent.
That means that more than half of the units in Boston are unsold.
There is no way to tell if a particular apartment is affordable.
In the meantime, some people may consider it a bargain if they can get by on $1 or $2 per month, said Zillower.
That said, the shortage is more of a concern for renters looking to move in.
“People need to be aware that they can’t just move into a home for the sake of living in it,” Kneppers said.
In some neighborhoods, the demand is even higher.
For example, one-person apartments are now the most popular rental units in the area.
But Kneers said many people are renting two-person units in a two to three-story apartment building.3.
Boston is one town, not a whole city.
Boston rents are a lot more concentrated than in other cities.
That’s not because Boston is a city.
It is, however, a place that has a large immigrant population.
Boston does have a large Latino population.
“We are in a city where many people have a Latino background, and they are the core of the population,” Kiely said.
That makes Boston a very diverse city, but also one that has relatively few people of color in its workforce.4.
Boston residents are more likely to rent.
“It’s not surprising that people are more apt to rent, especially if they are a new person moving into the city,” said Kielly.
While that’s true for everyone, it doesn’t always translate into affordability.
“A lot of people who are renting don’t really know what they’re getting into.
People are moving in and out of jobs,” Kuellen said.
The rental market in Boston can be difficult for people looking for a place to live.
There aren’t many rental options for new people, she said, and if you’re a renter, it can be challenging to find affordable housing.
“New people moving in, they’re looking for somewhere to live,” Kielen said, “but the rental situation can be tough.
You don’t know if it’s going to be affordable.”5.
Boston renters are more educated.
Boston had the highest percentage of renters in the nation in 2017, according the American Community Survey.
The number of adults with a college degree in Boston increased from 19.2 percent to 23.3 percent between 2015 and 2017.
That includes more than 16,000 people with a bachelor’s degree or higher, according data from the Boston-based Bureau of Labor Statistics.
There were more than 2.3 million adults in Boston with at least a high school diploma or a bachelor of science degree in 2017.6.
Bostonians are very concerned about housing affordability.
More than half the city of Boston has at least one rental unit in the next month, but renters are even more concerned than renters in other major cities.
